What should I do before my spray tan appointment?

EXFOLIATION is the number one most important pre-tan step, which should be done no less than 24 hours prior to appointment to allow skin to regroup and rebalance. I highly recommend an exfoliation glove verses chemical/liquid exfoliation, as it is important to make sure there is no oil or residue left over on the skin. If exfoliation glove is not available, make sure exfoliant is non-oil based. Skip all Dove products, moisturizers, oils, and creamy cleansing products, as these leave behind a barrier on skin that will prevent your spray tan from adhering properly and will disrupt the overall life of the tan. If you're unsure, text or email me prior, and I am happy to take a look at ingredients!

Fresh and clean skin is always best to work with, but I recommend waiting at least 4 hours after showering or bathing prior to your appointment. If this is not possible, make sure hair is sufficiently dry prior to spray tan.

Should I get my mani/pedi prior or after my spray tan?

Mani and pedi should be done prior to spray tan, and make sure all oils and moisturizers are fully cleansed from skin before appointment.

Should I shave or wax prior or after my spray tan?

It is absolutely essential that shaving and waxing be done prior to your spray tan appointment. Waxing and shaving both exfoliate the skin and will remove and strip spray tan. Like all exfoliation, 24 hours prior is best. If you must shave after your spray tan appointment, wait at least 24 hours, and shave gently to preserve your tan as best as possible.

What do I wear/bring with me during my spray tan appointment?

Ladies are welcome to wear as much or as little as they feel comfortable with. If clothing is worn, spray tan solution is non-staining and will wash right off in the laundry. Disposable thongs are available, as well. Gentlemen are required to wear any bottom of their choosing.

Please bring dark, breathable, and loose-fitting clothing to wear after your appointment. Cotton pants and t-shirt are best. It's best to skip tight yoga pants and anything tight-fitting to skin. In case of rain, please make sure to have an umbrella and fully covered feet, as any water that comes in contact with skin will remove your tan. A dark towel is recommended to cover car seat on the way home.

What do I need to avoid when my spray tan is developing?

Avoid coming in contact with ALL water, liquids, oils, and sweat as these will disrupt your tan from developing correctly. This means no makeup (oil-free powder is ok), no moisturizers, no sunscreen, and no activities that make you sweat until after your first shower. A cool and dry environment is best.

When can I shower?

Wait at least 8 hours to shower if standard solution is used, and 2-4 hours if express solution is used. Regardless of solution, it takes a full 24 hours for color to develop, reaching peak color at 8 hours. Keep in mind that the initial color you see immediately after your spray tan appointment is cosmetic only, and the actual tan is developing and deepening underneath. Ideally, it is best to avoid soap, shampoo, and conditioner when you initially shower off. Shower in warm water and gently rub hand in a circular motion to get the cosmetic bronzer off your skin completely - until water runs clear. If you have achieved your desired color by the 8 hour mark, feel free to use soap, but still rinse off the cosmetic bronzer first with water only until water runs clear for best results.

How do I maintain my tan?

Moisturizing is key to the longevity of your spray tan, but be conscious to avoid moisturizers with oils, fragrance, or alcohol, as these will strip the color. This also applies to bodywash, as well. Quick/mild-temperature showers are best, and avoid scrubs, loofahs, etc until your tan has faded. Gently pat-dry with towel, rather than rub, and limit shaving as much as possible.

How do I preserve my tan on vacation?

Moisturizing and quick/mild showers are key, in addition to what has already been discussed above. However, keep in mind that saltwater, hot tubs, and chlorine will inevitably fade your tan more quickly. So, what is my number one recommendation? Enjoy your vacation to the fullest, and be extra mindful to use spray-tan-safe moisturizer and sunscreen (like Coola or Babyganics). It's also important to note that spray tan does not protect against UV rays, so keep your sunscreen handy. Have the BEST time!
